Course Description

Gamification is the process of applying game-like systems and rewards to non-game environments for the purpose of motivating participants to engage in desired behaviors. For example a municipality could create a leaderboard and system of badges to reward citizens for participating in a recycling program. This class introduces the concepts of play and game theory that underlie the effectiveness of this process. Readings will cover research assessing different uses of gamification in healthcare, education, public relations and business among other applications. Students will design gamification platforms for a variety of different purposes and are encouraged to actually implement them in real world scenarios. The class will also cover the technical requirements of building such platforms and explore existing turn-key solutions for delivering them. We will also address the debate over gamification and the limits of its effectiveness.
