Midterm Usability Evaluation

For my usability, I used my target audience, 6 college aged guys who liked video games, to test the game. Overall they really enjoyed the game once they got going but had some trouble at the beginning. This could be because I don’t have a splash screen introducing the story, so readers are just thrown into the fire of it. By adding a splash screen I would be able to introduce the idea of the story and be able to bring reading in faster. Another thing that confused some people that the buttons were not quite big enough to notice right away, so I could change the color to something that stands out more and make it bigger. The story also had a problem with some people going back through to try to get a different ending, since they found one ending and decided that they were good there. This is a problem for me because I had different aspects of stories in different portals, where the Super Meat Boy portal is more comedic and then the Mario portal is more serious. I’m not sure how a good way to end the end the story and get them to try again. I could possibly do a general ending that encourages the reader to read though it again to try and get a different ending, which is probably the only good way to do it. Another thing that I need to work on is the music, because I still had my placeholder music it didn’t fit quite right, and I need to still work on finding a good background music for my game. One last piece of criticism for my work was that the art could have been more animated. While I agree with this and there were multiple pieces that I wanted to animate, it was much more of a time constraint that I wasn’t able to do it. Overall, they liked the design of the website, and could navigate it easily, but there was one problem with them not being able to go back to the start or to the portals. It would probably work better if I had an option to jump to those pages on the bottom of each iframe page. Since my message was simply to have a fun story and show that love isn’t everything to enjoy life, I think the message got across very well.
