Before next class, please complete the following:
Create a Trello page for the project that you will use to present from. Make sure all teammates have access to it and make it public! All members or your team must have a link the Trello page from their mywebspace page. You will lose 5 points from your first weekly grade if you don't.
Clearly identify the roles of each teammate. Divide up artist, programmer, and level design roles. Choose team leads.
You may conduct your brainstorming session however you'd like, however, I recommend the following approach: create a list of at least 15 interesting mechanics, themes, or games that you find interesting.
If you have a good idea of what your game is going to be about or its mission, be more selective when selecting mechanics, themes, or games. Make sure they relate to your mission.
Plug the list into this randomizer with a quantity of two or three. Hit refresh and take a minute or two to think about that combination of items and the kind of game that might make. No idea is bad during this stage — even bad ideas could spur ideas that turn into good ones. These random prompts are more about starting conversations and less about creating finished game concepts. Limit "no's" and critical feedback. Use the "yes, and..." technique.
Don't be critical at this stage. Document the process. Don't stop until you have at least 10 ideas. Write them all down as you think of them. Some of the ideas can be terrible. Post them to Trello.
Choose your three favorite game ideas from the list. Create quick sketches of each game. These can be quick. Scan them in or take photos and post them on Trello. Be prepared to present them to the class.
If you have a clear idea of what your mission statement will be, please share it. If unsure, you may let it emmerge from discussions of your sketches.
