Project Preparation

New Projects
  • Trello
Create a page, invite all teammates and post all of the following. If you want to use a different organzational structure or technology, now's the time to propose it.
  • Roles
Define your roles. Choose team leads. Leadership roles must also have additional production roles as well (e.g. UI design, sound design). A team member may take on multiple leadership roles, but will be responsible for all responsibilities listed.
  • Mission Statement
Define your player experience goals. What type of game are you trying to make? How will you know your game is successful? Be specific. Describe its essential characteristics.
  • Research
Research games that address the problem you're trying to solve in some way. Find at least three related games, post a card for each, and be prepared to talk about how it relates to your mission statement.
  • Brainstorming
After defining your mission statement, start brainstorming. Mix and match mechanics and ideas from your research. Identify your three most promising. Create quick sketches to demonstrate ideas. Scanned in napkin drawings OK.
  • Publishing Platform
Where will you publish this? What platform? Why?
Continuing Projects
  • Trello
Create a page, invite all teammates and post all of the following. If you want to use a different organzational structure or technology, now's the time to propose it.
  • Roles
Remind us of your roles. Tell us if anything will change (see process critique).
  • Revised Mission Statement
Define your player experience goals. What type of game are you trying to make? How will you know your game is successful? Be specific. Describe its essential characteristics.
  • Play
After reading through the following requirements, run the most recent version of the game and play it. While playing, have other teammates take notes for your Game Self-Critique.
  • Game Self-Critique
Create a list of your games' biggest flaws. What are your biggest problems? Address the following (along with anything else you think needs work): gameplay issues, aesthetics (visuals, sound), UI issues, theme.
  • Process Self-Critique
What worked last semester and what didn't? What specifically are you going to change from a process perspective?
  • Backlog
    Start thinking about it.
  • Freelance Tasks
Make a bulleted list of at least five tasks that need to happen that could be done by freelancers.
  • Agreement
Create a simple agreement that all parties agree to. It can be simple, but some things you might want to address are:
    • What happens if a subset of your team continues working on the project after the semster? Discuss credit and earnings.
    • How will you break down any earnings and/or award monies? Does the act of submitting or attending a competition affect that breakdown?
    • Discuss protocol for if a player wants to leave the team on their own accord.
    • Discuss protocol for if the team wants a player to leave the team.
Freelancers
  • Trello
Create a page, invite all teammates and post all of the following. If you want to use a different organzational structure or technology, now is the time to propose it.
  • Portfolio Projects
Clearly identify at least two projects you'd like to continue working on if you can't identify a freelancing task to complete. Remember the 50% rule.
  • Backlog
Create a backlog of tasks to complete for those portfolio projects.
  • Task Suggestions
Create a list of freelancing tasks you'd be interested in doing for other teams (e.g. menu music, in-game music, sound, ui design, high score server integration, ui programming, concept sketches...)
