It's a late September evening, and the sun has just set. The rustle of the leaves outside of your window overwhelm you with a feeling of fall. You've just finished your activities for the day and have become restless and slightly overwhelmed from work. You decide to do one of the few things that make you happy anymore; go for a walk at night.
You used to do this all the time when you were younger. You were old enough to venture out on your own without supervision but young enough to still have a spark in your eye for schooling and your dream job. That spark hasn't faded that much, but it's the beginning of the end as your boss piles their leftover business onto your schedule. But nevermind that, you think, this is your time, this is your walk.
As you open your door to brave the dark forest, a gust of wind almost sends you spiraling back into your house for some warth. It's not cold out, but the breeze makes it quite chilly. You decide to add a scarf to your ensemble and be on your way. As you move briskly through the trees and fallen leaves, you feel a chill of happiness creep it's way up your spine. The walk is working.
[[Continue->The Middle]]You look up to the sky. The moon has fully risen and the stars are shining brightly. It's been so long since you saw the stars. You don't get out as much anymore, but even if you did, the light pollution of your town would drown out all the little lights in the night anyway. Realizing this, you turn around and face the direction you came. You can only see a small flicker of your back porch light, meaning that you've strayed pretty far from home. However, you turn to face the rest of the woods in front of you. You don't want to lose this feeling of happiness and return home. You couldn't have been gone that long, you think, so you decide to proceed for a little while longer.
You have a horrible habit of looking at the ground when you walk. Years of using this technique as an invisibility cloak around others kept you from straightening out you posture long ago. Sometime you curse it for working so well around enjoyable company, but it's saved you some close calls with social interactions you didn't want to be a part of. Another benefit of this habit now is how mesmorized you become at all the newly fallen leaves crunching beneath your feet. The dewiness of nighttime has made most of them too wet to crunch, but sometimes you're able to find a particularly fresh one that makes you happier.
Since you've been staring at the ground so long, you decide to look back up for a moment. In that moment, you suddenly freeze, shocked by how much your surroundings have changed. The once bushy burning trees cloaked in darkness have been replaced with barren gnarled trees that twist in an unsettling manner. You don't recognize this forest anymore. You turn around to head towards the light you once saw but it is now completely dark around you. You can't even make out a path of leaves on the ground to follow that you may have crushed or brushed out of the way. All you see are towering twisted trees that don't seem to be friendly towards you. In a slight panic, you whirl around, searching for any sign of light or life outside of this newfound forest. You suddenly see a small peculiar building in front of you. You decide that it's a start.
Upon approaching the building, you see that it is much larger than you anticipated. From far away, it appeared to you as a homely shack rotting away at it's core. Well, the second part at least seemed to be right.
The "shack" was not a shack at all. In fact, it looked like it was a lovely home in it's prime. There were clearly two stories to the old family home, and it had concrete steps leading up to its entrance. Those were its two best attributes. The roof looked to be caving in from two sides, almost as if it was a race to see who could collapse on the house first. The railings of the steps were torn off with metal pieces jutting out from it's remains. It looks as though someone stole some of the bars for personal reasons, as they appeared to be cleanly sawed off. There were weeds everywhere around the house. You can't tell the color of the house since it looks a muddy green and brown from all the vines it's entrapped in. The grass is much higher around the perimeter of the house, which is strange because where you stand the grass isn't too tall. It looks as though this house was cut and pasted out of another forest. The door appears to be kicked outwards, with the bottom hinge barely clinging to the splitting doorframe. It looks like the kind of house you would scold a character in a horror film for going near.
At this moment, the wind picked up drastically. Your scarf is flying aggresively in the wind and is nearly choking you. You tuck your scarf into your jacket and look around. The gnarled trees are bending in a worse manner. They are somehow becoming even more twisted and disturbing looking thanks to the wind. You noticed you've been standing relatively close to one, and you heard the unmistakable sound of bark wood splitting. You look up and see a wavering branch bouncing high above you. In a second, the branch gives way to the wind, and it suddenly begins falling rapidly towards you. You quickly duck out of the way, but recognize that you are surrounded by potentially dangerous trees. Reluctantly, you run inside for shelter.
[[Continue->The End]]You find the inside of the home to be much larger than you imagined. The growth of the vines encasing the outside of the home stop at the doorframe, leaving the inside completely intact. You realize nobody lives here anymore from the amount of dust on everything. However, there are still many objects in the house such as tables, couches, and even a small chandelier hanging from the ceiling in the foyer you stand in. It seems like the owners picked up and left without any worry for their belongings.
You feel a shiver creep up your spine. You rub your arms to keep warm. It's quite dark in the house, so you carefully wander through the ground floor rooms to investigate further. Once passed through the kithcen, you find a door ajar. There is a warm light coming from the crack, so you creak it open to take a peek. You see a descending set of stairs leading to the source of the light. You assume this is the basement. The chill inside you subsides when you lookdown the stairs, giving you a true feeling of warmth. In search of prolonging this feeling, you proceed down the stairs.
The basement is as large as the house was above, as a good basement should be, you think. The strangest thing about the room is the large firepit in the center. You realize it's not a heater for the whole house and that it is, in fact, a large firepit used only to heat the room. The basement is quite decorated, as there are rugs, tables, and lounge chairs strewn all across the room. Some of the furniture is tipped over, probably from years of siting in the same spot as the furniture is mostly wooden. You feel comforted by this fire and the basement. You think you might stay awhile. You move towards the rug in front of the firepit to take a seat.
Just before crossing your legs to sit, you sense a feeling of uneasiness wash over you. You can't tell where it came from, but it's strong. You begin to question yourself: Why are you here? This is a stranger's house, you shouldn't be here. What's keeping you here? You need to get home. It's getting very late. You don't know where you are.
Listening to your better judgement, you refudse to sit down and get cozy. You walk briskly towards the basement stairs. As you put your foot on the first step, prepared to ascend, the wind finds you once again. This time, it blows throughout the entire open house. The wind travels through both doors down to the basement and swallows the roaring firepit in a second. You are struggling to keep your balance when you hear a door slam, presumably the one appearing to be broken outside. After a moment, you see the basement door slam shut as well, leaving you in a blanket of darkness. The wind finally stops.
After a few moments of heavy breathing, you manage to calm yourself down enough to think. Your breathing finally slows, but suddenly you hear another set of lungs breathing. The warm glow that the fireplace once brought suddenly illuminates you, but this time you do not feel as safe. You relize the yellow glow is coming from the ceiling. As you slowly look up into the darkness, you see two shiny yellow eyes burning back at you, along with a set of glowing yellow teeth to match.
[[Continue->The Game]]This is the beginning of the fight for your life. This is the beginning of the game. When playing, the dialogue prompts will be much shorter, allowing you to read them quickly and act. You must think quickly, as time is of the essence. You will be given a short amount of time to choose an action. If you let the timer run out, you will die and have to begin again. If you choose the wrong action, you will die and have to begin again.
Choose wisely.
